Illuminating Achievements

BL_AwardAt the last meeting of the Rose City Astronomers for 2015, this plaque was presented to outgoing club president, David Nemo, in recognition of his service and achievements for the club.  The plaque was constructed using one of my backlit (film) prints, but the cover glass was engraved with a message of thanks.

The frame is deeper than I usually use, which allowed us to put a spacer between the film print and the glass.  It’s only half an inch, but that’s enough to really separate the text from the image.  The lettering is filled with gold, as you can see.  How this shows up depends on the lighting:  With the backlight turned off it looks more or less like a glass plaque with gold lettering – the photo doesn’t show.  With the the backlight on, but with plenty of ambient light, it appears as you see here – the photo shows clearly, but the text is still gold.  In a darker environment the text becomes only a silhouette against the bright image.

I have made my backlit frames available to other people to put their own images in, but have not advertised or promoted this as a product.  I might have to re-think that now because this just looks so great that there must be a lot of people who would want one.  If you are interested, send me an email through the “contact” tab above.

About Greg Marshall

I am a retired electronics engineer and after a few months of enjoying my leisure I began to miss doing product development. My astronomy hobby always needed new solutions to unique problems, so I decided that whenever I came up with a good solution I would try to make it available to others.
